![]() YA fantasy novels tend to fall in the 400+ page category. I’ve taken a little break from my beloved YA fantasy lately, but I thought this stand alone novel might be a nice opportunity to get back into the genre. Can Hazel and Ben be the heroes the town needs, or will the complicated ties of love, lies, and betrayal be too much to bear? The waking of the faerie boy ignites an ages old conflict and leaves the town of Fairfold at great risk. Nobody expects the boy in the coffin to ever wake up, especially Hazel and Ben, who have both been drawn to the magical boy for years. For years, a glass coffin with a sleeping horned faerie boy had rested in the woods of the town. ![]() In their town of Fairfold, locals know that the magic of the faeries in the woods is something you must know how to protect yourself from. ![]() Hazel and her brother Ben are no strangers to the world of faeries. ![]() Nolyn, who has lived for centuries at odds with his militaristic father, has just been ordered to the front lines of the Goblin Wars in an assignment that is essentially a death sentence. The plot follows Nolyn-the only son of human Persephone and elf Nyphron -in the tumultuous events leading to Nolyn’s ascension from heir to emperor. Reading Sullivan’s books in publication order offers the most gratifying reading experience. Readers who know little of the world of Elan may be puzzled by repeated references to the Legends of the First Empire series. With a dozen and counting published books set in the world, new readers may feel intimidated. Though Sullivan states it is not necessary to read any of his other novels before Nolyn, a knowledge of the history of the empire and its power struggles adds vital context. “When the fate of the world is in your hands, gambling is an unaffordable luxury, and idealism is often burned on the altar of reality.” This review contains minor spoilers for The Legends of the First Empire. Grimdark Magazine received an ARC of Nolyn in exchange for an honest review. ![]() The Rise and Fall series will depict the formation and collapse of an empire over time, with each novel following a different main protagonist. This novel takes place about 850 years after the end of the Legends series and 1000 years before Riyria. Nolyn is set in the same world as Sullivan’s beloved Riyria novels and The Legends of the First Empire series. Sullivan has just released the first book in his new trilogy, The Rise and Fall. ![]() ![]() ![]() The following year, we had to refugee a second time because war between Japan and the United States seemed inevitable. I missed him very much, and in telling him so, I managed a piece of writing I am not ashamed of to this day.Ī lot has happened to me since I wrote that letter. We were living in Shanghai, and my father was working in our old home territory, which at the time was across various battle lines. I say fortunately, because the samples that did manage to survive are terrible, with the single exception of a rather nice letter I wrote to my father when I was seven. Fortunately, very few samples of my early writing survived the eighteen moves I made before I was eighteen years old. ![]() I must have tried writing soon afterward. I know I began reading when I was four or five, because I couldn't stand not being able to. When I was twenty, I wanted to get married and have lots of children.Īnother question I can't answer is, "When did you begin writing?" I can't remember. But when I was ten, I wanted to be either a movie star or a missionary. One is, "When did you first know that you wanted to become a writer?" The fact is that I never wanted to be a writer, at least not when I was a child, or even a young woman. People are always asking me questions I don't have answers for. ![]() ![]() ![]() It may not be a work of grit and suffering, but it’s fun and that, to my mind, is worth all the hoity-toity awards in the world. So hats off to Stand Up, Yumi Chung! Sure it’s a funny story couched in a meaningful one, but for what it’s saying and how it says it, I award it a great big rubber chicken. And, most importantly, show them that women can be just as hilarious as guys. Give them an alternative to the deadly serious fare that’s out there. You know what they’ll do instead? Make kids laugh. You might find one or two written for 9-12 year olds in a given season, but they’re probably not going to attract much literary cred. This is why funny books written by women are such unicorns in the publishing world. Humorists have a purpose on this planet, but you’re not going to win a Nobel or a Pulitzer or even an Oscar most of the time for making someone laugh. And being funny, quite frankly, isn’t something that tends to make the cut. ![]() ![]() Living as we do in an age when every other book published is an inspiring group biography, our children are currently steeped in the very serious nature of what makes a woman great. Astronomer John Barrow takes an intriguing look at the limits of science in a book which weaves together a fascinating tapestry of ideas and illuminates some of the most profound questions of science-from the possibility of time travel to the very structure of the universe. Some of these limits are consequences of our nature, some are consequences of the universe's nature, while others are consequences of the nature of knowledge itself. Then we will explore the different types of limits - practical, computational, and fundamental - that constrain what we can know about the universe. Are there limits to science? We will look first at the questions which 19th-century commentators claimed would never be answered. ![]() ![]() See my notes below or Amazon for details and reviews.
